School Overview
James Cameron School is one of six schools recognized by the BC Ministry of Education as an accredited independent school for children diagnosed with a learning disorder such as dyslexia, dysgraphia and/or dyscalculia.
Since 1980, our school has provided an environment in which dyslexic students experience success and increased confidence with differentiated instruction that focuses on their strengths.
Why You’ll Love It Here
James Cameron School values lifelong learning. Professionally, we are committed to supporting employee development opportunities that enhance the performance of both the individual and the school.
Our school provides a positive and healthy environment that is personally rewarding: it is extremely fulfilling to belong to a community that teaches struggling readers how to break the alphabetic code and discover the joy of learning.
What We Value
Our mission is simple: To provide evidence-based differentiated instruction for students with language-based learning disorders such as dyslexia.
Our vision: James Cameron students are empowered to realize their full potential and are given the tools they need for a lifetime of learning.
Our values: Our professional educators, right learning tools and small class sizes.
What Makes Us Unique
We work together to build students’ confidence, changing “I can’t” into “I CAN!” This is done by following the Ministry of Education curriculum, but taught with adaptations and accommodations to maximize student success.
We recognize that all students are diverse in the ways in which and the rate at which they learn – emotionally, physically and intellectually.
Our ratio of students to staff is 4:1. We value small class sizes to optimize individualized instruction, and our small supportive community of like-minded professionals creates a desirable work environment. We often hear how “warm” our school feels.
Our School Community
At James Cameron School, our philosophy of learning is that all children deserve an opportunity to learn in a way that best matches their learning style.
We embrace diversity and believe in the unique potential of each child. We support and aim to inspire every student in a passionate, caring and stimulating learning environment.
Our positive and warm environment fosters a community in which both students and staff flourish through a web of interdependence.
Nestled in Natural Beauty
James Cameron School is located in Maple Ridge, a scenic community in Metro Vancouver at the base of the Golden Ears Mountains. Just 56 kilometres east of Vancouver, the area offers easy access to surrounding cities via the Golden Ears Bridge.
Maple Ridge blends small-town charm with urban convenience. Residents enjoy affordable housing, vibrant arts and culture, and endless outdoor activities — from hiking and biking to kayaking and horseback riding. With over 200 kilometres of trails, provincial parks, and three major lakes, it’s a hub for outdoor enthusiasts.
The community is also home to the ACT Arts Centre, museums, and comprehensive health services, making it an ideal place to live, work and explore.
