Fluently bilingual teachers in French and English with a Bachelor of Education degree (or equivalent) at the elementary or secondary level may be eligible for a B.C. teaching certificate.
French-speaking educators can also apply for roles within B.C.’s Francophone school board, which serves 6,000 students across 47 schools with 1,200 staff members. Requirements vary by role and district, so connecting with our advisor is the best way to learn about specific opportunities.
Types of French Teaching Roles
Core French
Core French is a mandatory second language for students in grades 5 to 8. Teachers help students develop foundational communication skills in French while fostering an appreciation for Francophone culture. Depending on district policies, Core French teachers may work with multiple classes or grade levels.
French Immersion
French Immersion provides a full bilingual education focused on Francophone culture. Programs start in Kindergarten/Grade 1 (Early Immersion) or Grade 6 (Late Immersion) and continue through Grade 12. French Immersion teachers deliver instruction in French across subjects, gradually introducing English as students progress.
Francophone Program
The Francophone Program, offered by the Conseil scolaire francophone de la Colombie-Britannique, is designed for students whose parents speak French as a first language. Delivered almost entirely in French from Kindergarten to Grade 12, the program emphasizes Francophone identity and cultural development.
Certification & Qualifications
- Bilingual fluency in French and English
- Native-like French fluency (for Francophone school board roles)
