Financial Awards for Teachers
Northern communities offer tight-knit schools, outdoor adventure and the chance to make a lasting impact. They also provide three opportunities for financial awards for teachers who move to some of the province’s rural and remote communities:
In addition, teachers in some districts are paid a remote and rural allowance of approximately $3,035 per FTE annually. When paid monthly, for example, a full-time continuing employee would receive an additional allowance of $295 per month for 10 months or $246 per month for 12 months.

In B.C., secondary schools typically serve Grades 8–12. Teachers are often hired to teach specific subject areas to multiple grade levels.
In smaller or rural districts, secondary teachers may teach across subjects or take on multi-grade or interdisciplinary roles.

How to Qualify for a B.C. Teaching Certificate
If you already hold a teaching certificate from another Canadian province, you may qualify for a B.C. certificate without extra coursework. Not yet certified? Learn how to get started today.
Waiting for certification? A letter of permission may be obtained through the Teaching in British Columbia page on the B.C. government’s website to allow the employment of an uncertified teacher. These letters of permission enable an individual to teach within the system for a period of time without certification.
Training and Educational Programs

To prepare teachers for the classroom, teacher education programs include theoretical coursework and an in-school practicum. The length of training to prepare a teacher for the public school system ranges from one to two years, depending on the program.
