What We Value

At Chalo School, we believe every child matters. Our philosophy centers on individualized learning, cultural respect and academic excellence.

We emphasize collaboration among educators, continuous growth, and the integration of Cree and Dene languages and traditions across all grades.

Our work reflects Fort Nelson First Nation’s vision of a strong, healthy, proud and self-reliant community, where education supports not only academic success but also cultural identity and well-being for every student.

What Makes Us Unique

Chalo School holds a special place in education history as the first First Nation school in British Columbia to be accredited by the Ministry of Education. Recognized nationally as a model for Indigenous education, we blend academic rigor with cultural learning and hands-on programs, including cultural arts and culinary arts.

With small class sizes and personalized instruction, our students thrive in a supportive, innovative environment that nurtures both their minds and their spirits.

Our School Community

Community is at the heart of everything we do. Each day begins with a morning circle that welcomes students, staff and families to come together for reflection, sharing and connection.

Our educators collaborate closely to provide consistent and caring support for every learner. From cultural celebrations to community gatherings, Chalo School is more than a place of learning. It is a family where we create an inclusive and respectful environment.

Surrounded by Nature

Living in Fort Nelson means embracing northern beauty, community spirit, and a slower, more connected way of life. The town offers all essential amenities, including recreation facilities, restaurants, movie theatre and family-friendly parks, surrounded by stunning wilderness.
