Welcome to Vancouver Island West School District

Vancouver Island West School District #84 operates five schools in the communities of Gold River, Kyuquot, Tahsis and Zeballos. In partnership with our diverse communities, we provide high-quality education to prepare students for the modern world while honouring local traditions and learning. Our district is on the traditional territory of the Nuu‐chah‐nulth peoples, specifically the Ehattesaht, Ka:’yu:’k’t’h/Che:k’tles7et’h’, Mowachaht/Muchalaht and Nuchatlaht Nations.

Why You’ll Love it Here

With just around 350 students across five schools (two elementary, three secondary) and roughly 90 staff, this is a small, tight-knit district where students and educators build strong relationships.

More than a workplace, the district provides a chance to live ruggedly while making a real difference. The district also offers incentives like remote recruitment and retention allowances, isolation allowances, signing bonuses and moving support.

A flexible school calendar (with every second Friday off for professional development or in-service) encourages work-life balance and professional growth

What Makes Us Unique?

We are located on the rugged west coast of Vancouver Island. Three of the schools are in remote rural communities accessible by logging roads and/or water taxi. Our district serves a diverse community, of which approximately 50% are First Nations.

This district is well suited to individuals who want to be fully engaged in their community and enjoy access to wilderness pursuits.

Our Specialty Programs

Many classes are multi-graded, reflecting a wide range of learning needs. The board and district prioritize placing resources and services directly at the school level to best support student learning.

The Nootka Sound Outdoor Program (NSOP) offers grades 10–12 students elective credits through flexible outdoor learning beyond school hours. Students participate in wilderness activities and stewardship projects at their own comfort level.

At Gold River Secondary, Grade 12 students can participate in a program that allows them to earn credits while taking college courses through North Island College.

Our School Community

In Vancouver Island West, our schools serve vibrant coastal communities where learning is connected to place, people and culture. Rooted in relationships and a strong sense of belonging, we foster a school culture where students and staff are supported to grow with purpose, compassion and a deep respect for one another and the land we live on.

As a small but connected learning community, we value curiosity, creativity and continuous growth. In Vancouver Island West, every learner is known, valued and empowered to reach their full potential.

The Coastal Lifestyle

Life here is rooted in the rhythms of the natural world. Surrounded by coastal waters, lush forests and expansive beaches, towns offer a slower, calmer pace of living. Residents enjoy easy access to outdoor adventures, whether it’s kayaking before breakfast, hiking among towering cedars or taking evening walks along quiet shores.

Our schools are closely connected to the communities they serve, and children grow up with a strong sense of place and belonging. The coastal lifestyle emphasizes wellness, togetherness and respect for the land and the people who call it home.
